Holiday Hedonism

If you're anything like me you probably dedicate a lot of time to polishing your daily routine; Trying to make the most of your time, programming in exercise and meals and generally trying to create order and consistency in your life. It's a delicate balance that can be easily disrupted so I feel no small measure of pride when I can stick to it for a few weeks without interruption and reap the benefits in improved health and well-being. Then comes the time we look forward to all year - Holidays! and all the hard work goes out of the window... or does it?

If you've been working on creating an ongoing caloric deficit and built good diet and training habits then holidays might make you feel a bit uneasy. Once you broken your streak you might rightly fear that you won't be able to get back into it.

Honestly though, a bit of indulgence won't do you too much harm. A week or two of relaxation will benefit your health in ways that might make a departure from the daily routine worthwhile. In the same way that a cheat meal can be beneficial to your overall diet success, a holiday can help to prevent you from getting jaded with your regime, lower your stress levels and improve your mood.

All you need to do is strike a bit of a balance. Don't go from a few alcoholic drinks at the weekend to two weeks of constantly smashing back the pinot grigio! You can afford to indulge a little as long as you don't get too carried away. The same goes with food. On a self catering holiday you could stick to sensible eating for two meals a day and eat out for one meal a day, then you won't do yourself too much harm but you'll still get to treat yourself a bit.

If you have been working to create a caloric deficit remember that your Basal Metabolic Rate is the calories you can consume to maintain the same weight, so for a week you could ditch the deficit and run with your BMR and your weight shouldn't increase. A few hundred extra calories in a day will mean you can have some fun without destroying all your hard work.
